Accredited Exercise Physiologist
An accredited exercise physiologist (AEP) is a university-qualified allied health professional, who specialises in prescribing and delivering safe and effective exercise interventions. AEPs work with people with a range of chronic health conditions, injuries and disabilities. Our AEPs use best evidence-based practice to ensure the needs and requirements for each individual patient are met.
Whether you’re looking to move more or move better, suffering from an injury, or have a chronic health condition or disability, an AEP has the skill-set to help! The ultimate goal of an AEP is to help you understand the importance of movement and how to best implement that into your life. More specifically, our AEPs can offer advice and guidelines on the following:
- Hip and knee osteoarthritis
- Osteoporosis
- Oncology
- Metabolic conditions
- Musculoskeletal injuries
- Sport specific strength training
- Falls prevention and balance
- Weight management
- Mental health conditions
Our AEPs strive to provide patient centred care to ensure the patient feels understood and comfortable. Movement is a fundamental part of our lives and our AEPs don’t want this to be a daunting or unpleasurable experience.
They are there to work with the patient to provide individual care and consideration of all facets of life. Our aim is to use exercise and movement to improve the patient’s quality of life overall.
AEP Services
All patients must undergo an initial assessment with the AEP to gain a greater understanding of their medical history, injuries, physical limitations and personal requirements.
The AEP will also conduct physical assessments (if applicable) to assist with prescribing an appropriate exercise intervention.
Each assessment will vary and is highly dependent on the needs and goals of the patient.
An AEP will conduct a review consultation to check in with the patient and review their current status and goals. In this assessment, the AEP may re-assess physical assessments previously done, update exercise programs and allow for progress and modifications.
This type of session is highly important when there are changes in health or physical function to ensure the patient is exercising in a safe and appropriate manner.
It is also an important session for motivation to keep the patient accountable.
A patient may be recommended or wish to undergo 1:1 exercise sessions with the AEP.
This might be to establish confidence and understanding with an exercise program and/or gym setting.
This may also be the wish of the patient for accountability and supervision to work towards their goals.
Our AEPs also run small group exercise classes, where each patient will have an individualised program to follow.
The patients will generally undergo a 1:1 Exercise Session with the AEP before joining the group class to ensure they are confident with their program and the exercise equipment.
The group classes are a cost effective way for patients to undertake their own personalised program with supervision from the AEP, in a safe and encouraging environment.
